From 1st to 12 July 2002, PRAESA will host a workshop
on writing and
illustrating childrens story books in the Arts Block at UCT.
The workshop will be run by Leen Van den Berg and Jan de Kinder
from
Belgium. Both have considerable experience writing and illustrating
childrens books in Europe, and in conducting workshops of this nature.
PRAESA 's focus is to encourage the development of childrens literature
by African language speakers. To this end, writers and illustrators
from an African language background are particularly encouraged
to attend. While the workshop will be conducted in English, writers
will be invited to write in their home languages.
It is possible that some writers and illustrators will be approached
to have their stories published at the end of the workshop process.
Participants will need to:
- Have some knowledge of and interest in the area of childrens
picture
storybooks
- Be keen to develop childrens storybooks
- Bring artistic materials they wish to use
- Think about possible themes that they would like to explore
in the
workshop
If you are enthusiastic about writing and/or illustrating childrens
stories, but have not yet had your work published, you
are invited to contact Carole Bloch or Tracy Beckett
at the above number for further details.
